The Saqqara bird

Egyptian (200 BCE)

Modern day archaeologists have different theories in respect to this aerodynamically shaped artifact carved from sycamore wood which was discovered during the 1890 excavation of the Pa-di-Imen tomb in Saqqara, Egypt. Was it simply a toy, a weather vane, a hunting boomerang or just a ceremonial falcon ? Or was it something much more than that ? Something as amazing as the representation of modern day aeronautics ?

The Saqqara bird has been dated to approximately 200 BCE. It is now housed in the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo.
